Acne Vulgaris - What Is Whitehead Pimples?

By Ben Paul

Acne vulgaris is a skin infection and can be abnormal in nature. Whiteheads and blackheads are types of acne that causes pimple and zits. The name vulgaris is indeed a big sounding name, but don't be scared by the name because this type of skin condition is very treatable.

You develop these annoying little sores when your pores become clogged with dirt and oils. These clogs are called plugs and they can be white or black, hence the name whitehead and blackhead. Knowing you have pimples is the easy part; now let us learn how and why.

People who suffer more from pimples and zits are teenagers and young adults, but adults too, do get them once in a while. Zits usually occur on the face, arms, legs, and sometimes the shoulders. Hormonal changes is one the reasons why people get pimples, other reasons are humidity, sweating, and oily cosmetics. As many people would have you believe; nuts and chocolates actually do not cause pimples.

Do not pick a pimple if it becomes inflamed, because the infection inside the clogged pore can spread and cause more pimples. The best way to tackle this problem is with soap. Most pimples can be treated by washing your skin with a mild soap at least once, but preferably twice a day. If your hair tends to be oily, wash that every day too. When you wear make-up, make sure it is water based and not oil based and your skin will thank you for it. Oil as you probably know is one of the biggest causes of zits.

There are many topical creams on the market that might help too. The most popular over the counter treatments contain either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These strong active ingredients work by killing bacteria and drying up oils on your skin. These products might be too harsh for people with sensitive skin as they may cause dryness and peeling. If you skin is too sensitive for pharmaceutical topical cream, there are some herbal remedies available that could help you clear the pimples.

If you have severe case of acne vulgaris it is advisable to see your physician and see if he or she can prescribe something more powerful for you. Top of the line antibiotics or topical cream are generally preferred in such severe situation. Luckily with most of these conditions, they don't last; most clears up within one or couple weeks.
